Volcanic activity at Mount Etna has disrupted transport links across Sicily. On Wednesday, hundreds of passengers were left stranded in Catania after flights were canceled due to the eruption and the spread of volcanic ash.
Catania Airport was closed until at least 4 p.m. on August 13. Restrictions also affected Comiso Airport in the southern province of Ragusa. The closures were prompted by falling volcanic ash, which poses a serious hazard to aircraft and can significantly disrupt runway operations.
For passengers, the disruption has meant flight cancellations and delays, as well as uncertainty over when normal service will resume. The reopening of the airports depends on the development of volcanic activity and the safety of air traffic.
At the same time, the eruption has become a major attraction for tourists. Visitors are gathering at locations offering views of Etna’s fiery activity and lava flows. Against the dark volcanic slopes, streams of glowing lava can be seen moving down the mountain.
Mount Etna is considered the most active volcano in Europe and frequently shows signs of activity. However, even eruptions that are relatively familiar to the region can have a significant impact on daily life, disrupting air travel and creating hazards from volcanic ash.
