Industry specialists note that modern vessels rely heavily on complex computer systems that support navigation, communications, cargo management, and data exchange with ports. These systems have become attractive targets for cybercriminals. Of particular concern is the activity of groups linked to state-backed organizations, which possess the capability to launch sophisticated cyberattacks against transportation infrastructure.
One of the industry’s key challenges is the lack of adequate investment in maritime cybersecurity. Although vessel operating costs often amount to hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of dollars per month, budgets allocated to protecting digital systems remain relatively small.
