Defense manufacturing is increasingly being positioned as an engine of economic growth. This approach is outlined in Japan’s latest Defense White Paper, which identifies investment in military technologies as a tool to support advanced manufacturing, innovation, and high-tech industries.

The government plans to strengthen cooperation with the private sector, increase funding for innovative startups, and expand the use of commercial technologies in defense production. Officials believe this strategy will both enhance Japan’s defense capabilities and create new opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

At the same time, Tokyo continues its largest military modernization program since World War II. A significant share of new funding is being directed toward long-range missile systems, unmanned technologies, and other next-generation defense capabilities.

The strategy has already drawn criticism from China. Beijing argues that the White Paper exaggerates regional security threats and is being used to justify Japan’s continued military expansion. Despite the criticism, Tokyo intends to stay the course, viewing the defense sector as a key contributor to the country’s future technological leadership and economic development.
