The Tanzania-flagged containership Golden Star 1 sank off the coast of Indonesia’s Batam Island after suffering significant water ingress into its hull. The incident occurred on June 5, only a few hours after the vessel had departed from the Port of Singapore.
According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the vessel went down approximately 6 kilometers from Batam Island. All nine crew members on board were safely rescued by Indonesian authorities, and no injuries were reported.
Preliminary reports indicate that the casualty was caused by flooding inside the vessel. At the time of the incident, Golden Star 1 was carrying 107 containers. Following the sinking, authorities issued navigational warnings to vessels transiting the area and urged mariners to report any containers spotted adrift at sea.
Built in 1995, Golden Star 1 operated regional services between Singapore and the Malaysian port of Pasir Gudang. Despite the incident, vessel traffic through both the Singapore Strait and the Strait of Malacca remains unaffected. Authorities have also confirmed that no signs of oil pollution have been detected in the surrounding waters.
