Xi Jinping called on China and Egypt to strengthen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation. The Chinese president arrived in Cairo for a state visit marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
On September 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo for a state visit at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. This is the Chinese leader’s first visit to Egypt in 10 years, with his previous trip taking place in 2016.
At Cairo International Airport, Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were personally welcomed by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Egypt’s First Lady, Entissar el-Sisi.
The Chinese leader accompanied his arrival with an Egyptian proverb: “If you drink from the Nile once, you are destined to return.” In an article published ahead of the visit, Xi Jinping recalled that Egypt had made a strong impression on him 10 years ago with its ancient civilization and pace of development.
But the current trip carries more than symbolic significance. Beijing hopes to use the visit to deepen its strategic partnership with Cairo and expand cooperation across several areas — from infrastructure and technology to tourism, science and education.
