According to Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), the returned assets are linked to the long-running investigation into the 1MDB scandal.

She stated that the figures are based on information provided by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Despite the substantial recovery, a considerable amount of assets connected to the 1MDB case remains seized, frozen, or subject to confiscation proceedings in the United States and several other countries.

Azalina also noted that it is currently impossible to determine the exact value of the remaining assets, as it depends on ongoing legal proceedings and fluctuations in market prices.

The 1MDB scandal is regarded as one of the largest financial corruption cases of the past several decades. Spanning multiple countries, the investigation has resulted in the recovery and confiscation of billions of dollars’ worth of assets that prosecutors allege were purchased using misappropriated public funds.
