A truly remarkable event took place in Shenzhen—one that, until recently, seemed possible only in science fiction. Full-sized humanoid robots entered the ring, exchanging powerful punches, delivering high kicks, and even pulling off a real “head fake”—quite literally, without a head.

During one of the tournament’s most dramatic matches, a robot lost its head after taking a heavy blow. It looked as though the fight was over and the winner had been decided. Instead, the machine continued attacking its opponent, absorbing punches, and moving around the ring thanks to its core computing systems housed inside its torso. The moment brought the crowd to its feet and became the highlight of the event.

The world’s first full-contact humanoid robot fighting tournament, Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL), was organized by Chinese robotics company EngineAI. The competition featured 32 teams, all using the EngineAI T800 humanoid robot, which stands 1.73 meters tall. Throughout the tournament, the robots executed uppercuts, spinning kicks, evasive maneuvers, and even recovered independently after being knocked to the ground.

According to the developers, competitions like this provide the perfect opportunity to test advanced technologies under extreme conditions. Engineers evaluate balance control, decision-making speed, sensor performance, and structural durability. The data collected is expected to accelerate the adoption of humanoid robots across manufacturing, industry, and many other real-world applications.

The tournament was also attended by internationally renowned actor Donnie Yen, who admitted that watching real robots fight was even more impressive than anything he had seen in science fiction movies.

According to the organizers, the competition is far more than just entertainment. It serves as a demonstration of how quickly China is moving toward an era in which humanoid robots become an integral part of everyday life.
