China is challenging Samsung and SK Hynix as CXMT begins supplying its latest LPDDR6 memory for Xiaomi’s upcoming foldable smartphone. The move marks an important step forward for China’s semiconductor industry.
Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT has begun mass production of LPDDR6, its latest memory technology for mobile devices. The first smartphone to feature these chips will be the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold, which the company plans to launch in September.
LPDDR6 is CXMT’s most advanced mobile DRAM chip. The company began mass-producing the previous-generation LPDDR5 less than a year ago, highlighting the rapid pace of its technological development.
Xiaomi is also preparing its own 3-nanometer Xring O3 processor for the 18 Fold, which will be compatible with the new memory. CXMT is gradually narrowing the technological gap with global giants such as Samsung and SK Hynix. Its new chips are designed not only for smartphones, but also for servers and intelligent vehicles.
The company’s growth has been impressive: in the first half of the year, its revenue surged 874% year over year to 150.3 billion yuan ($22.36 billion).
