Global sportswear giant Nike has announced a significant restructuring of its sales operations in China. Starting January 1, 2027, the company will discontinue product sales through third-party online platforms, focusing instead on its official website, mobile app, and flagship stores.
The announcement has already triggered a noticeable market reaction, with shares of several Chinese distributors declining following the news. Nike says the move is intended to strengthen control over pricing, reduce channel fragmentation, and deliver a more consistent customer experience.
Some international media outlets have interpreted the decision as a sign of weakening consumer demand in China. However, industry analysts argue the opposite, noting that China’s sporting goods market continues to expand. They believe the changes reflect Nike’s strategic response to intensifying competition rather than declining demand. As both Chinese and international brands continue to strengthen their market positions, Nike is adapting its business model by improving its sales channels and refreshing its product portfolio to remain competitive.
