China has commissioned its own ultra-large ethane and ethylene carrier with a capacity of 99,000 cubic meters. The vessel was fully designed and built in China. China Global Television Network (CGTN) reports.
The 230-meter vessel is designed to carry several types of liquefied industrial and energy gases, including ethane, ethylene and LPG. It was developed by Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
Yuan Shizhen, chief designer of the series, said vessels of this type will primarily be used to transport ethane to Chinese petrochemical companies.
One of the new carrier’s key features is its propulsion system. The vessel is equipped with a shaft generator and an ethane-fueled main engine. According to Yuan, the technology can reduce sulfur emissions by around 99% and hydrocarbon emissions by 18%.
The project also focuses on keeping operating costs down. The vessel is designed for long-distance transportation, with lower fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs.
China is expanding its capacity to transport liquefied gases while developing technologies aimed at making gas shipping more efficient and economical.
