Qatar has called for the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning of serious consequences for the global economy. As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate, Tehran has threatened to establish a maritime “exclusion zone”
Qatar said reopening the Strait of Hormuz is one of its main priorities amid the ongoing escalation between the United States and Iran. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Mohammed Al Ansari, warned that a prolonged crisis could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy.
According to China Daily, Doha is also calling for efforts to prevent the conflict from spreading further and to move toward dialogue involving all countries in the region. Qatar believes that the main obstacles are political will and the search for technical solutions to restore normal shipping operations.
Iran has announced that it is revising its strategy toward U.S. warships and military bases. A U.S. State Department spokesperson, meanwhile, said Washington was coordinating with regional partners to ensure that disruptions to maritime traffic do not become the new normal.
The situation in Yemen is adding to regional tensions. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for large-scale missile and drone attacks on military and energy facilities in southern Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities reported 73 people injured and fires at several energy facilities, some of which were temporarily forced to suspend operations.
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy warned that disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could have a direct impact on the economies and security of Arab countries, as well as the global economy.
