China’s central government has recommended a record 16 Hong Kong civil servants for two-year positions at the United Nations. The authorities expect the young professionals to share Hong Kong’s positive experiences with the international community.

China’s central government has recommended a record 16 Hong Kong civil servants to participate in the United Nations’ two-year program for young professionals, China Daily reports.

A ceremony marking the appointments was held on Tuesday at the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Hong Kong. Representatives of the central government and the Hong Kong administration called on the young professionals to share the development experiences of China and Hong Kong with their international colleagues and apply the knowledge they gain after returning.

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong said that working at the United Nations would allow the civil servants to broaden their international outlook, gain experience in global governance and build new professional networks. He said Hong Kong’s representatives would also serve as representatives of the region and demonstrate the achievements of the “one country, two systems” principle.

In 2019 and 2023, Hong Kong sent five and 12 young civil servants, respectively, to the UN program. Nearly half of the participants from the previous groups received offers from the United Nations to extend their service.

One of the new participants, Senior Police Inspector Daniel Wu, will work in the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna. He said he hopes to gain experience in multilateral cooperation and apply it to public administration and personnel training after returning to Hong Kong.
