The Strait of Hormuz Becomes Tehran’s Main Leverage
The Strait of Hormuz has once again become a focal point of confrontation between the US and Iran. Tehran says the strategic waterway will remain closed until Washington accepts its demands. The statement directly contradicts remarks by the US president, who said the previous day that Washington had “full control” of the strait.
The US Central Command says American naval forces continue to enforce a maritime blockade of Iran. According to the command, as of August 12, 59 commercial vessels had been forced to change course, three vessels had been disabled and two others had been detained for inspections.
Iran, meanwhile, rejects claims that normal shipping through the strait has resumed. Iranian authorities insist that the waterway will only be reopened once Washington meets Tehran’s conditions.
US-Iran Talks Remain Deadlocked
Negotiations between the US and Iran also remain deadlocked. Key points of disagreement include the status of the Strait of Hormuz, US sanctions, the unfreezing of Iranian assets and compensation related to the conflict. Tehran is demanding compensation from Washington for the damage caused, while Trump has made a counter-demand that Iran compensate the families of US service members killed over the decades.
Amid the escalating tensions, the United Nations is urging both sides to return to dialogue. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said a lasting settlement could only be achieved through negotiations and should ensure the safety and freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
The situation is already affecting international shipping, with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remaining significantly below normal levels as carriers continue to seek alternative routes.
