According to the Coast Guard, over 55 incidents involving Chinese Coast Guard and research vessels were recorded in June—an 83% increase from May and more than double the figure for the same period in 2025.

Taipei is confident that Beijing is gradually escalating pressure, employing not only military forces but also coast guard vessels to expand its footprint in the region. Taiwanese officials warn that such actions could be groundwork for a potential blockade of the island’s Pacific supply routes.

In response, Taiwan’s Coast Guard is preparing joint exercises with the Navy to protect key sea lanes. According to an agency spokesperson, several Chinese Coast Guard ships were converted from former naval destroyers, significantly boosting their capabilities. Taipei also noted that Chinese vessels have begun attempting to contact commercial ships; however, merchant vessels have been advised to ignore such queries entirely and maintain their planned routes.
