Since the beginning of July, China’s national power grid has set three new all-time peak load records, reaching 1.553 billion kilowatts. According to the National Energy Administration of China, electricity demand continues to grow, fueled by the country’s ongoing digital transformation and the rapid development of emerging industries.
The strongest growth has been recorded in sectors linked to artificial intelligence and electric vehicles. Electricity consumption by EV charging infrastructure and data centers increased by nearly 40% year-on-year, while power usage at EV charging stations surged by almost 57%.
Experts note that China is becoming one of the world’s leading adopters of AI across manufacturing, agriculture, and the service sector. To support rising electricity demand, the country is simultaneously expanding renewable energy capacity and energy storage systems, building the infrastructure needed for the next stage of technological development.
At the same time, China is accelerating its transition to green energy. In the first half of the year, the country’s installed wind and solar power capacity reached 1.95 billion kilowatts, while renewable energy accounted for 40% of total electricity generation. According to experts, further expansion of energy storage capacity will enable China to support the growth of high-tech industries while reducing the carbon footprint of its power sector.
