First Station Opens Near Düren
Germany has put its first pilot digital weight control station for heavy goods vehicles into operation. The facility is located on the A4 motorway near Düren, between Aachen and Cologne, at the Rur-Scholle-Süd service area in the direction of Cologne.
The facility became operational just over a year after construction began. Its main purpose is to identify overloaded trucks, reduce pressure on roads and bridges and improve road safety.
The project is being implemented by Autobahn GmbH and Germany’s Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM). Autobahn GmbH is responsible for building and operating the technical infrastructure, while BALM will use the facility to enforce truck weight regulations.
Trucks Are Weighed While Moving
One of the key features of the new facility is its high level of automation.
Sensors integrated into the roadway measure loads from trucks while the vehicles are still moving. This allows the system to identify vehicles that may be exceeding permitted weight limits before they are stopped.
If a truck appears suspiciously heavy, its registration number is displayed on LED signs and the driver is automatically instructed to leave the main traffic flow and enter the inspection area.
The system eliminates the need for personnel to stand close to traffic lanes and manually signal individual trucks to pull over.
Suspected Trucks Undergo a Second Weight Check
The initial measurement is used to select vehicles requiring a more precise inspection.
After leaving the main traffic lane, the truck slowly passes over a dedicated weighing lane. A legally relevant weight measurement is then carried out and the result is documented.
If the truck is confirmed to be overloaded, administrative enforcement procedures are initiated. The vehicle is not allowed to continue its journey until the excessive weight has been removed. Cargo may therefore have to be unloaded or redistributed before the truck can return to the road.
The system allows inspectors to focus their work on vehicles that have already been identified as potentially overloaded.
Germany Plans 16 Weight Control Stations
The A4 facility is the first site in a wider German program to digitalize truck weight enforcement.
A total of 16 stationary weight control stations are planned across Germany’s motorway network over the coming years. The long-term objective is to establish a nationwide system for detecting overloaded and improperly loaded heavy goods vehicles.
The technology is expected to make inspections more efficient compared with traditional enforcement methods, where officers must manually select trucks from moving traffic.
For road freight operators, this means that the probability of detecting an overweight vehicle will increase significantly on routes equipped with the new technology.
Why the A4 Was Chosen
The location between Aachen and Cologne was selected because of the high volume of freight traffic using the A4 corridor.
Large quantities of cargo arriving from the major European ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam travel along the motorway toward Germany and other European markets.
The corridor is also strategically important because Cologne-Eifeltor, Germany’s largest container rail freight terminal, is located nearby.
The A4 therefore plays an important role in both international road freight and intermodal transport, resulting in substantial heavy vehicle traffic and corresponding pressure on infrastructure.
Germany Moves Toward Digital Truck Enforcement
For German authorities, truck weight enforcement is closely linked to protecting motorway infrastructure. Heavy goods vehicles place significant loads on road surfaces and bridges, while overloaded trucks can accelerate infrastructure deterioration.
Digital control systems allow far more vehicles to be screened without stopping every truck for an initial inspection.
The launch of the Düren facility shows how truck enforcement in Germany is gradually moving from selective manual inspections toward automated systems capable of screening vehicles directly in moving traffic.
For international carriers, the change makes accurate monitoring of gross vehicle weight and axle loads increasingly important before a truck begins its journey through Germany.
