Aviation Regulator Approves VDX
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has certified VDX, a purpose-built vertiport designed to handle electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Skyports Infrastructure developed the facility in cooperation with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.
According to the project partners, VDX is the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport to receive regulatory certification. Located next to Dubai International Airport, the facility is expected to become the primary hub of Dubai’s future air-taxi network.
The certification confirms that the infrastructure meets the applicable operational and safety requirements. It does not, however, mean that scheduled passenger services have already begun. Aircraft certification and operator approvals will still be required before commercial flights can be launched.
Capacity Will Reach 170,000 Passengers
The four-storey facility covers approximately 3,100 square metres. It includes two dedicated eVTOL takeoff and landing areas, high-capacity charging infrastructure and passenger facilities designed to support rapid aircraft turnaround.
Once commercial operations reach their planned scale, VDX will be able to handle as many as 170,000 passengers annually. Because eVTOL aircraft do not require conventional runways, vertiports can be placed closer to business districts and other major centres of passenger demand.
During the certification process, the GCAA assessed the facility’s physical characteristics, operational procedures, safety-management systems, emergency preparedness and regulatory compliance.
Three More Vertiports Are Planned
VDX will form the central part of a network that is expected to include three additional vertiports. The planned locations are intended to provide air connections between the airport and key areas of Dubai.
GCAA Director General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi described the certification as a historic achievement for the UAE and an important milestone for the future of aviation. Skyports Infrastructure CEO Duncan Walker said the infrastructure, operational standards and regulatory framework required for commercial eVTOL services were moving into practical implementation.
Air taxis could provide Dubai with an additional transport option linking the airport, business districts and tourist areas. Their actual effect on urban mobility will depend on ticket prices, flight frequency, aircraft approvals and the integration of vertiports with ground-transport networks.
