South Korea’s HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and U.S.-based Fraser Industries have signed a memorandum of understanding to modernize Fraser Shipyards in Superior, Wisconsin. The project marks the first step in introducing HD Hyundai’s smart shipyard technologies to the U.S. market.
The modernization program covers the entire production cycle, from optimizing shipyard layout and manufacturing processes to deploying robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics solutions.
The companies plan to sign a consulting agreement later this year. Once completed, Fraser Shipyards is expected to serve as a demonstration site for the broader modernization of U.S. shipbuilding facilities.
As part of the project, HD Hyundai specialists will assess the shipyard’s existing infrastructure, equipment, and production lines before implementing technologies designed to improve operational efficiency, shipbuilding quality, and workforce productivity. The initiative will also focus on strengthening supply chains and accelerating the digital transformation of manufacturing processes.
The partnership is part of HD Hyundai’s expanding cooperation with U.S. companies as Washington seeks to rebuild the country’s commercial and naval shipbuilding capabilities.
