Beijing authorities are rapidly expanding the use of robotics in urban management. This summer, 72 robots have been deployed across 14 municipal parks, taking on a broad range of responsibilities, including cleaning, security patrols, guided tours, public safety monitoring, and pest control.
Robots Take Over Cleaning, Patrols, and Guided Tours
One of the key deployment sites is the Summer Palace, where autonomous cleaning robots independently plan their routes, avoid pedestrians and vehicles, adjust their cleaning intensity according to the amount of litter, and can even spray water while operating. Equipped with advanced sensors and navigation systems, the robots continuously analyze their surroundings in real time.
At Yuyuantan Park, 11 robots are already in service, including AI-powered patrol units capable of detecting smoking and other rule violations before issuing automated voice reminders. The park also features robotic tour guides that not only accompany visitors along designated routes but also provide guided commentary and answer selected questions.
Robots Join the Fight Against Mosquitoes
Pest control has also become part of Beijing’s smart park strategy. At Zizhuyuan Park, robotic mosquito traps imitate the carbon dioxide exhaled by humans, attracting mosquitoes without the use of chemical agents. Real-time monitoring data is transmitted directly to park staff, enabling more accurate analysis of insect activity and the development of targeted pest-control measures.
From Pilot Project to Citywide Program
The initiative began in 2024 with the launch of the “Robot + Landscaping” pilot program at Yuyuantan Park. Over the past two years, more than 20 robotic systems developed by 18 companies have been tested under real-world conditions. The most successful technologies are now being rolled out across additional municipal parks throughout Beijing.
According to city officials, data collected by the robots will eventually be integrated into a unified monitoring platform. This will improve park management, optimize maintenance operations, and further expand the role of robotics in urban landscaping and public infrastructure management.
