Iran and Oman have reached a mutual understanding on the key provisions of an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for a 60-day period. If the proposal is approved by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the agreement could be officially announced within the next few days.
What the Agreement Includes
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, handling a substantial share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.
According to published reports, vessels entering the Strait of Hormuz will follow a route close to the Iranian coastline, while outbound ships will sail along Omani waters. No transit or service fees will be charged, and regional countries may participate in mine-clearing operations and technical measures to ensure the safe resumption of navigation.
Sources also indicate that, once the agreement is approved, Iran and the United States are expected to resume implementation of their memorandum of understanding, including provisions related to the safe passage of commercial vessels through the strait. Media reports add that indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, conducted through intermediaries, have entered their final stage.
