Amazon Expands LTL Network to Deliver Freight to Third-Party Facilities

Amazon continues to expand its portfolio of freight transportation services. The company has announced an expansion of its less-than-truckload (LTL) offering, allowing shippers to move freight not only to Amazon facilities but also to third-party warehouses, distribution centers, and retail locations across the United States.

Previously, Amazon LTL services were primarily designed for suppliers shipping into Amazon’s network. With the latest update, shippers can now leverage Amazon’s logistics infrastructure to deliver freight to virtually any commercial destination, significantly broadening the service’s capabilities.

According to Jim Ruiz, Director of Amazon Freight, customers have consistently requested an LTL solution that matches the reliability and service quality traditionally associated with full truckload (FTL) transportation.

The expansion marks another step in the growth of Amazon Freight, which already offers truckload, intermodal, and supply chain transportation services. While Amazon’s FTL network has long supported deliveries to third-party locations, that capability had not previously been available for LTL shipments.

Amazon noted that millions of pallets moved through its internal LTL network over the past year alone. The company says this infrastructure will now be available for shipments of all sizes, regardless of the final delivery destination.

The move follows another significant logistics expansion announced by Amazon last month. The company opened its transportation and fulfillment network to all shippers, including businesses that do not sell products on Amazon’s marketplace. This provides access to Amazon’s extensive logistics assets, including more than 80,000 trailers, over 24,000 intermodal containers, a fleet of more than 100 cargo aircraft, as well as warehousing, distribution, and fulfillment services.

The latest developments underscore Amazon’s strategy of transforming its logistics ecosystem into a full-scale commercial platform for external customers. Over the past several years, the company has steadily expanded its transportation offerings through initiatives such as Amazon Relay, its digital freight marketplace, and its growing LTL services.

Industry observers note that Amazon’s continued expansion in freight transportation is increasing competition across the logistics sector and strengthening the company’s position as a major player in the U.S. transportation and supply chain market.
