Commercial Vehicle Theft Is Becoming More Organised
The theft of trucks, vans and other high-value commercial vehicles in Europe is increasingly associated with professional criminal networks. Offenders study installed security systems, use specialised equipment and select routes that allow stolen vehicles to be moved rapidly across national borders.
According to telematics company Geotab, many fleet operators still rely on security assumptions that no longer reflect the current threat. A common belief is that fitting a single GPS tracker provides sufficient protection and will guarantee the recovery of a stolen vehicle.
Signal Jammers Can Disable a Single Device
Professional thieves expect commercial vehicles to carry tracking equipment and may use widely available signal jammers. If a vehicle has only one tracker, locating or disabling that device can leave the fleet operator without any visibility.
In its vehicle-theft guidance, Geotab argues that a security system should not contain a single point of failure. Operators are advised to combine several independent tracking devices that communicate through different channels.
If one layer is disabled, the remaining equipment can continue transmitting information. This forces offenders to spend more time attempting to suppress the system and increases the likelihood that the vehicle will be detected.
Factory Telematics Is Not a Complete Anti-Theft System
Factory-installed telematics is mainly designed for vehicle operation, mileage analysis, maintenance and fleet management. It may provide useful location data, but it is not always engineered specifically to resist organised vehicle theft.
Some vehicles also allow data transmission to be restricted through privacy settings. These functions serve a legitimate data-protection purpose, but under certain conditions they may create a security weakness that criminals can exploit.
An independently installed tracking unit operating through a separate communications channel can maintain visibility if the factory system is disabled or its signal is jammed.
Telematics Can Detect Warning Signs Before Theft Is Reported
Modern telematics can do more than locate a vehicle after it has been stolen. Data analysis can identify unusual activity before the driver or operator officially reports the vehicle missing.
Possible warning signs include:
- leaving an authorised geofence;
- movement during the night or outside normal operating hours;
- deviation from an approved route;
- an unexpected international border crossing;
- the sudden loss of data from one tracking device;
- an unusual sequence of stops or movements.
Automated alerts give dispatchers or security centres additional time to verify the situation and contact law enforcement. Geotab says the first minutes after suspicious movement begins can determine whether a stolen commercial vehicle is successfully recovered.
International Fleets Need Cross-Border Procedures
Criminal networks operate across national borders and use different routes depending on the country. Police reporting procedures, response times and vehicle-recovery processes also vary across Europe.
A security model designed for one national market may therefore be insufficient for an international fleet. Operators need to consider regional risks and establish clear instructions for dispatchers and drivers in every country covered by their transport network.
Technology Must Be Combined With Response Procedures
Geotab recommends treating fleet security as an integrated system rather than a single hardware purchase. A multi-layered approach can combine independent trackers, geofencing, movement-anomaly analysis, automated alerts and coordination with a continuously staffed security centre.
Technology should be supported by clear response procedures defining who checks an alert, contacts the driver, protects company systems and reports the incident to police. This approach cannot eliminate every theft, but it can provide earlier warning and improve the chances of recovering a stolen commercial vehicle.
