Hyundai Motor and Kia, together with Korean Register, shipping company HMM, and several South Korean partners, have completed the world’s first successful demonstration of an autonomous robot operating aboard a commercial vessel. The trial took place on the multipurpose ship Hyundai Dubai, confirming that robotic platforms can perform effectively in a real maritime environment.
During the demonstration, the MobED mobile robot, originally designed for land-based applications, successfully adapted to the vessel’s continuous motion. Thanks to its independently controlled wheels and advanced stabilization system, the platform maintained a level position while navigating the cargo hold. The robot successfully completed autonomous route navigation, maneuvering tasks, and operated reliably at both low and high speeds.
Following the trial, the project partners said MobED could be used to inspect hard-to-reach areas, transport materials, and perform tasks inside hazardous cargo holds containing toxic or explosive substances. The developers also plan to further adapt the platform for operation in narrow corridors and engine rooms, expanding its potential role aboard next-generation smart ships.
