The United States accused COSCO, China’s largest shipping company, of potentially using its vessels to intercept military communications and collect intelligence

Suspicions surrounding Chinese shipping companies have once again come into focus amid continued tensions between Beijing and Washington. This time, the allegations concern COSCO Shipping Corp, China’s largest fleet operator.

The company categorically denied statements by unnamed US officials alleging that its vessels were equipped with covert technology designed to intercept military communications and collect intelligence. COSCO called the allegations “groundless” and stressed that they have no factual basis.

According to the company, communication, navigation, rescue and other equipment aboard its vessels is used exclusively for standard commercial purposes, including navigation safety, communication with shore-based services and emergency response. COSCO also said it operates in accordance with international and market-based standards.

As reported by China Daily, the shipping giant objected to the dissemination of information that it believes could damage its reputation and disrupt its international operations. COSCO also reserved the right to take legal action to protect its interests.
