Rescuers in Nepal continue searching for people who may be trapped inside hydropower tunnels. Amid the widespread disaster, the death toll has already surpassed 1,300.
According to Reuters, rescuers in Nepal are focusing their efforts on finding more than 900 hydropower workers who went missing following landslides and devastating floods. According to military estimates, approximately 121 people may be trapped inside tunnels where air pockets and enclosed rooms could potentially provide shelter.
Particular attention is being given to the Chilime hydropower plant in the Rasuwa district. According to Shri Ram Neupane, four of the six missing workers there may still be alive. Authorities have already obtained the specialized equipment needed for the rescue operation.
The disaster began on August 26, when the collapse of part of a glacier sent a massive flow of mud and rocks into a river along the Nepal-Tibet border. The resulting floods caused widespread destruction in settlements and damaged roads.
According to the latest information, at least 1,300 people have died in Nepal and Tibet, while another 5,500 remain missing. Nepal has also appealed to the international community for specialized equipment to support search-and-rescue operations.
