GMS Acquired the Tankers for Recycling
The US government has sold two confiscated oil tankers to Dubai-based Global Marketing Systems, a company specialising in the purchase and recycling of ageing vessels. According to Lloyd’s List, the transaction took place in July 2026, although its value was not disclosed.
The sale covers the Era, previously known as Marinera and Bella 1, and the Lileo, which formerly sailed as Galileo and Veronica. Both vessels are expected to be permanently withdrawn from commercial service and dismantled at ship-recycling facilities in Alang, India.
Reuters reported that GMS received the required US licences on August 8. The company said it acquired the vessels directly from the US government and made no payment to their previous sanctioned owners. A court order also authorised the sales.
Era Was Seized After an Atlantic Pursuit
The Era, IMO 9230880, was seized by the US Coast Guard and American special forces in January 2026 in waters south of Iceland. The operation followed a pursuit across the Atlantic that lasted several weeks.
The tanker had previously left the Caribbean, where the United States was conducting a campaign to restrict Venezuelan oil exports. Washington alleged that the vessel had been used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran. Reports about the sale do not, however, establish that such cargo was on board at the time of the seizure.
The vessel changed its registration and came under the Russian flag during the pursuit. After its capture, it was taken to waters off Scotland pending further legal proceedings.
Lileo Was Captured in the Caribbean
The second tanker, Lileo, IMO 9256860, was seized by US forces in the Caribbean Sea in January. The vessel was also sailing under the Russian flag at the time and was subject to US sanctions.
Like the Era, it had changed its name and registration details several times. Such practices are commonly associated with vessels operating through opaque ownership structures on sanctioned oil routes.
GMS chief executive Anil Sharma told Lloyd’s List that the ownership histories of the two tankers were complex and that their previous beneficial owners were difficult to identify. It is therefore more accurate to describe Era and Lileo as Russian-flagged or Russia-sanctioned vessels rather than tankers with confirmed Russian ownership.
Recycling Will Prevent the Vessels’ Return to Trading
A seized tanker cannot remain in government custody indefinitely without generating additional costs. Security, crewing, maintenance, anchorage and marine services are required, while the value of an ageing vessel continues to decline.
GMS said both tankers are destined for controlled recycling. Once dismantled, they will be unable to return to commercial service under new names, flags or ownership structures.
The disposal of Era and Lileo demonstrates that sanctions enforcement can extend beyond the detention of vessels or confiscation of cargo. It can also lead to the permanent removal of ageing tonnage from international oil trading. The US Treasury has said such cases are assessed individually, taking legal, financial and environmental risks into account.
