The ongoing Ebola outbreak in Africa is the third largest recorded in history. As of July 20, more than 2,000 confirmed cases have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with approximately 1,000 resulting in death. An additional 20 cases, including two fatalities, have been confirmed in Uganda, bringing the overall death toll even higher.
According to the WHO, the outbreak is progressing at an alarming pace, even faster than previous Ebola epidemics. Of particular concern are the so-called “unknown transmission chains”—around 80% of newly reported cases cannot be linked to any previously identified source of infection. Health experts believe the actual number of infections may be several times higher than official figures indicate.
The situation is being further aggravated by ongoing armed conflicts, large-scale population displacement, overcrowded refugee camps, and attacks on healthcare facilities. The WHO and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warn that there remains a significant risk of the virus spreading beyond the Democratic Republic of the Congo to neighboring countries across Central and East Africa.
As the epidemiological situation continues to deteriorate, international organizations are calling for an urgent increase in healthcare funding, expanded disease surveillance, and accelerated containment measures to prevent what could become one of the most severe Ebola epidemics in history.
