China’s Ministry of Commerce has called on the United States to completely remove the additional tariffs imposed under the pretext of combating so-called “forced labor.” The ministry stated that such measures are a clear manifestation of unilateralism and trade protectionism.
The statement came in response to Washington’s decision to impose new tariffs on imports from 60 countries, including China, following an investigation conducted under Section 301. Beijing emphasized that China consistently opposes forced labor, has established a comprehensive legal framework to prevent such practices, and continues to strengthen enforcement against labor violations.
China also noted that the United States had previously stated that any replacement tariffs on Chinese goods would not exceed 20%. The current rate stands at 12.5%. Chinese authorities said they will continue to assess Washington’s actions, reserve the right to take all necessary countermeasures, and remain committed to pursuing dialogue based on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.
