The damage marks the third serious incident near the Ukraine–Moldova border in less than a week, forcing carriers to reroute traffic again
Traffic and Customs Clearance Suspended
A renewed Russian attack involving strike drones damaged infrastructure at the Vinogradovka–Vulcănești international road crossing on the Ukraine–Moldova border.
Ukraine’s State Customs Service said movement through the checkpoint had been suspended and customs formalities for passengers, vehicles and cargo were no longer being performed.
“Traffic through the checkpoint has been suspended, and customs formalities are not being carried out,” the authority said
Travellers and transport companies have been advised to use other operational crossings. Authorities will announce separately when the checkpoint can reopen.
According to the Moldovan Border Police, the first strike on the Ukrainian checkpoint was recorded at approximately 2:55 a.m. on August 25. A Moldovan border patrol later observed two further explosions at the Vinogradovka facility.
The Ukrainian and Moldovan checkpoints are approximately three kilometres apart. Preliminary information indicated that there were no casualties. Moldovan authorities reported finding no drone fragments or other hazardous objects on their territory.
Third Border Incident in Six Days
Drone strikes and related security incidents are becoming more frequent close to Moldova’s border. Ukrainian and Moldovan authorities have reported at least three serious episodes near active transport crossings within six days.
On August 20, Russian drones attacked port infrastructure in Reni. According to Moldova’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, an explosion occurred at a truck parking area in Ukraine, approximately 150 metres from the Giurgiulești–Reni crossing. The resulting fire spread onto Moldovan territory, while drone debris was subsequently discovered inside Moldova.
On August 21, drones damaged Ukraine’s Tabaky checkpoint opposite Moldova’s Mirnoe crossing. The Moldovan Interior Ministry reported that the drones came down approximately 300 metres from the state border. Operations at the crossing had to be temporarily suspended.
The August 25 strike on Vinogradovka continued this sequence. Unlike the incident near Reni, the two latest attacks directly damaged road border-crossing infrastructure.
Moldova Strengthens Protection at Border Crossings
Following the Reni and Tabaky incidents, Moldovan authorities ordered additional security measures at checkpoints along the Ukrainian border. The measures announced by Moldova’s Interior Ministry include establishing protected areas inside checkpoints and preparing nearby premises for use as emergency shelters.
The arrangements are intended to protect border police, customs officers, other public employees, travellers and commercial drivers passing through the affected areas.
The repeated incidents demonstrate that the risk is no longer limited to Ukrainian Danube ports and warehouses. Road border infrastructure is also increasingly exposed. The proximity of these facilities to Moldova creates additional risks from falling debris, airspace violations and fires spreading across the state border.
Carriers Face Further Rerouting
The closure of the Vinogradovka–Vulcănești crossing means trucks scheduled to use this route must divert to other operational checkpoints.
Rerouting may increase mileage and fuel costs, affect drivers’ working and rest schedules and place additional pressure on neighbouring border crossings. Carriers may also face delivery delays and missed appointment windows at warehouses and logistics terminals.
Transport operators should check updates from Ukrainian customs and the border authorities of both countries before dispatching vehicles. A crossing that has recently reopened may be suspended again if a new security threat emerges.
No timetable has been announced for repairing the damaged Vinogradovka infrastructure. Traffic and customs clearance will remain suspended until the authorities issue a further notice.
