Mass attacks disrupted domestic and international rail services, while passengers on trains delayed for more than five hours will receive meals
Trains Continue to Operate Where Conditions Permit
Large-scale Russian attacks across several Ukrainian regions caused substantial disruption to passenger rail services.
Ukrzaliznytsia reported the delays on August 27. The railway continued operating on sections where security conditions allowed while monitoring the airspace and taking measures to protect passengers and employees.
“We continue operating wherever the security situation allows,” the company said.
The initial announcement did not identify the specific infrastructure sections affected by the attacks. The duration of each delay depended on the route, the reopening of restricted sections and whether trains could be moved through them safely.
The Delay List Included 112 Services
As of 08:31 on August 28, Ukrzaliznytsia’s official monitoring service showed 112 delayed services. The effect of hostilities was listed as the reason for most disruptions.
The longest delay reached 15 hours. Services with the most substantial delays included:
- train No. 775/776 from Sumy to Kyiv — 15 hours;
- train No. 69/70 from Kremenchuk to Przemyśl — 12 hours;
- train No. 131/132 from Kremenchuk to Mukachevo — 12 hours;
- train No. 129/130 from Poltava to Mukachevo — 12 hours;
- train No. 143/144 from Sumy to Rakhiv — 10 hours and 16 minutes;
- train No. 103/104 from Orilka to Lviv — 10 hours.
Three additional trains were preparing to depart behind schedule. The expected delay for train No. 297/298 from Odesa to Kharkiv, for example, was six hours and 30 minutes.
The figures represented a snapshot and could change as services resumed. Ukrzaliznytsia warned that estimated departure and arrival times remained provisional.
International Services Were Also Affected
The disruption extended beyond domestic services to trains connecting Ukraine with Austria, Poland, Moldova and Romania.
The Kyiv–Vienna service was delayed by eight hours and 28 minutes, Kharkiv–Chełm by seven hours and 48 minutes, Kyiv–Przemyśl by six hours and 15 minutes, Kyiv–Chișinău by six hours and 11 minutes, and Kyiv–Bucharest by five hours and four minutes.
Long delays on international services may affect connections with other trains and buses. Passengers should remember that operators responsible for onward journeys may apply their own rules concerning ticket changes and waiting for delayed services.
Meals Will Be Provided During Delays of More Than Five Hours
Ukrzaliznytsia and World Central Kitchen are arranging meals for passengers and railway employees on trains delayed by attacks for more than five hours.
Food will be distributed at an intermediate station selected according to the train’s actual progress. Passengers should follow instructions from onboard crews and station employees concerning the location and timing.
The railway also advised travellers to carry drinking water and snacks because journeys may take substantially longer than planned.
Passengers Must Use Shelters During Air Alerts
In its official passenger notice, Ukrzaliznytsia instructed people at stations to enter shelters during air alerts and closely follow announcements.
If boarding continues during an alert, railway employees will issue a separate announcement and explain how passengers can reach their train safely.
Passengers affected by the disruption should:
- monitor push notifications in the Ukrzaliznytsia application;
- check station information screens;
- follow announcements and employee instructions;
- remain in shelters until instructed otherwise;
- allow for further changes to provisional departure times.
The company noted that an announced delay may either increase or decrease after restrictions on the relevant section are lifted.
Kyiv Ring Train Services Have Resumed
The Kyiv Ring Train temporarily suspended operations because of the security threat. Full service was subsequently restored.
The temporary suspension was a safety measure and did not constitute a cancellation of all remaining services for the day. Passengers should continue checking operational announcements because further restrictions may be introduced with limited notice if the threat returns.
Schedule Disruption May Continue After Routes Reopen
The timetable cannot return to normal immediately after movement restrictions are lifted. Trains must pass through previously closed sections in sequence, while dispatchers redistribute available capacity between passenger and freight services.
A delay affecting one train can also disrupt the return journey of the same rolling stock, crew schedules, carriage servicing and track availability at major stations.
Individual services may therefore remain behind schedule after the immediate security threat has ended. Passengers should check their train’s status before travelling to the station and again after arriving.
