Two people sustained minor injuries as the temporary closure of a major Bavarian transport hub disrupted regional and long-distance rail operations
An explosion occurred in a building passageway near Augsburg Central Station in Bavaria during the early hours of September 2, 2026. According to police information reported by Bayerischer Rundfunk, the blast was recorded at approximately 03:15 in the Bahnhofstrasse area.
A 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man sustained minor acoustic trauma. Both were reportedly passing through the area when the explosion occurred. Windows in a nearby building were also damaged.
No additional casualties were reported. Investigators have found no indication that the two injured people were specifically targeted.
Police subsequently discovered another suspicious object inside the station area. The building was evacuated as a precaution, while all train movements through the station were suspended at approximately 08:30.
Explosives specialists from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office examined the object with the assistance of detection dogs and a specialised robot. It was later determined to be harmless.
Preliminary findings suggest that the first explosion may have involved a hand grenade. Police have not yet issued a final conclusion concerning the device, its origin or how it was placed near the station. No arrests have been announced.
The suspension was temporary. Augsburg Central Station reopened later in the morning after the security inspection was completed, allowing train services to resume.
Initial reports stating that all rail traffic had been halted therefore no longer represent the station’s current status. Some delays and cancellations could nevertheless continue as the operator restores timetables and moves trains held on adjacent sections of the network.
Passengers were advised to check current departure information before travelling. Road traffic and local public transport around the station forecourt were also temporarily affected.
Augsburg is an important Bavarian rail junction serving regional and long-distance passenger routes. There is no confirmed evidence, however, that freight corridors were closed for an extended period or that railway tracks and signalling infrastructure were damaged.
The most significant disruption affected passenger services. The closure may have temporarily influenced the allocation of rail capacity around the station, but authorities have not reported substantial delays to freight trains.

Investigators are examining fragments of the explosive device, surveillance footage and possible routes used by the person who left it. The motive remains unknown.
Police have not confirmed terrorism or organised crime as the background to the incident. Until forensic examinations are completed, claims concerning the perpetrators or purpose of the explosion remain unverified.
