Pyongyang and Moscow have opened a new two-lane bridge, stretching about one kilometer across the Tumen River. The project is intended to facilitate trade between the two countries and serve as a new symbol of their growing strategic partnership.
According to Reuters, Russia and North Korea have opened the first road bridge connecting the two countries across the Tumen River on their border in Russia’s Primorsky Krai. The first trucks have already begun using the new two-lane, approximately 1-kilometer-long structure.
The opening ceremony was attended via video link by the prime ministers of Russia and North Korea. The Russian prime minister described the bridge as a symbol of friendship and said it should provide additional momentum for trade, economic cooperation and other ties between the two countries.
Construction began in April 2025 after the project was approved during the Russian president’s visit to North Korea in 2024. The two countries previously had direct rail and air connections, but no full-scale road crossing.
According to the Russian prime minister, the bridge will be able to handle around 300 vehicles per day. Cargo traffic began immediately after the opening, while the facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year, including for passenger transport.
