An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 occurred off the coast of Taiwan on Tuesday, August 25, at 3:00 p.m. Beijing time. The epicenter was located in waters off Taitung County at a depth of approximately 10 km.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the epicenter was recorded at 22.61 degrees north latitude and 121.63 degrees east longitude. Given the relatively shallow depth of the quake, the tremors may have been felt in nearby areas.
Information about the earthquake’s impact is still being assessed. Xinhua has not reported any casualties, structural damage or other serious consequences related to the tremor.
Taiwan is located in a seismically active region, making earthquakes a regular occurrence on the island. It lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically and volcanically active areas on Earth.
As more information becomes available, local authorities will be able to assess the potential impact of the earthquake and determine whether additional safety measures are required.
