China’s electricity consumption reached 10.37 trillion kWh in 2025, setting a new national record. The milestone reflects the country’s sustained economic growth and the ongoing expansion of its energy infrastructure.
To meet rising demand, China continues to invest heavily in upgrading its power grid. Last year, investment in the sector totaled 639.5 billion yuan, with more than half allocated to modernizing distribution networks and improving the reliability of electricity supply in rural and remote areas.
According to the National Energy Administration of China, the total length of transmission lines operating at 220 kV and above has now exceeded 1 million kilometers. The country’s extensive ultra-high-voltage transmission network enables efficient long-distance power delivery between regions.
At the same time, China is accelerating its transition to clean energy. In 2025, electricity generated from renewable sources accounted for 38.5% of total electricity consumption, while the number of electric vehicle charging stations nationwide surpassed 20 million.
