Flight Lasted Less Than Two Minutes
A Chinese space mission ended in failure on the evening of August 10 at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan province. The Long March-7A rocket lifted off at 8:02 p.m. Beijing time carrying the ChinaSat-4B (Zhongxing-4B) communications satellite, but an anomaly occurred shortly after the start of the flight.
According to specialists, the rocket broke apart approximately 85 seconds after liftoff at a relatively low altitude. The satellite, which was intended for deployment into a high orbit, was also lost and did not reach space.
Chinese authorities have not yet disclosed the technical cause of the accident. The launch site said an investigation is underway.
A Setback for One of China’s Key Rockets
The Long March-7A is used to launch heavy payloads into high orbits. This was the second failed flight of this version of the rocket since its debut in 2020. Following its first failure, the rocket completed more than a dozen successful missions.
The latest incident is therefore more significant than an isolated launch failure, although there is currently no basis for describing it as a systemic crisis for China’s space program. The Long March-7A performs relatively specialized missions and is not the main launch vehicle used for most of China’s launches into low Earth orbit.
What China Lost
ChinaSat-4B belongs to a series of high-orbit communications satellites. Such spacecraft are used for telecommunications and broadcasting, meaning the failed launch resulted in the loss of both the rocket and the satellite.
The accident is not expected to directly affect all of Beijing’s upcoming space projects. The planned Chang’e-7 lunar mission, for example, will use a different launch vehicle — the Long March-5.
For China, the immediate priority is to determine what caused the failure. If the problem is traced to a specific component of the rocket, the consequences could be limited to additional inspections and delays to individual launches. If the investigation reveals a more serious design flaw, Beijing may have to reassess the Long March-7A’s operational program.
For now, the accident remains a localized failure involving a single mission. But in the space industry, incidents like this are often a test of how quickly a program can identify the cause, correct the problem and return to flight.
