Passengers Forced Into the Water
The fire broke out aboard the KM Putri Yasmin at around 4:39 a.m. local time as the vessel was traveling from Padangbai port in Bali to Lembar on Lombok. Passengers ended up in the water as several rescue boats and other vessels operating nearby joined the evacuation effort.
By Wednesday, authorities had confirmed that 172 people had been rescued. One Indonesian national died. One Australian citizen was among the survivors, while the rest were Indonesian. More than 200 rescue personnel took part in the operation.
Why Were There More People on the Ferry?
This could become one of the key questions in the investigation. According to port authorities, the vessel’s official manifest listed 114 passengers and 17 crew members. Yet rescuers evacuated 172 people — significantly more than the number recorded on the original passenger list.
Authorities have not said that overcrowding caused the fire. The exact cause of the blaze has also not yet been established. Those questions will have to be answered as the investigation continues.
Not the First Incident of Its Kind
The incident involving the KM Putri Yasmin came less than a month after another ferry disaster. Earlier in August, the KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire off the island of Madura. Five people died, and the vessel was also carrying more people than were listed on its manifest.
The issue is particularly significant for Indonesia. The country is made up of more than 17,000 islands, making ferries one of the main means of transportation between regions. Sea travel is often cheaper and more accessible than air travel.
But that dependence also makes safety standards a critical issue. If discrepancies between official passenger lists and the actual number of people on board become a recurring practice, the problem goes beyond the cause of any single ferry fire.
As the search operation continues, the key questions are what exactly happened aboard the KM Putri Yasmin and why Indonesia has faced a similar tragedy again only weeks later.
