Explosion Occurred During Maintenance Work
One person was killed and six others were injured in an explosion at a Gunvor Energy facility in the Port of Rotterdam. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time on August 13, 2026, in the port’s Europoort industrial area.
A Gunvor spokesperson told Reuters that the incident happened during maintenance work on one of the company’s storage tanks. Dutch media reported that a contractor’s maintenance team may have been working on pipelines connected to the tank.
The injured received medical assistance, with several ambulances and a trauma helicopter dispatched to the facility. Authorities did not immediately disclose the condition of those hospitalized.
Police and Labour Inspectors Are Investigating
Rotterdam police established a secured investigation area, while the Dutch labour inspectorate also sent specialists to the site. The incident is initially being treated as a possible workplace accident.
Investigators found no immediate indication of sabotage or other deliberate action. Police stressed, however, that no definitive conclusion had been reached and that all possible causes remained under consideration.
Gunvor said it was cooperating with the authorities. The company has not disclosed the full extent of the damage or provided a timetable for restoring the affected equipment.
Power Outage Was Unrelated to the Explosion
A transformer fire caused a major power failure in another section of the Port of Rotterdam on the same day. Several companies temporarily halted operations and evacuated personnel.
The port authority and emergency services determined that the power failure was not connected to the explosion at the Gunvor facility. Electricity supplies were restored by the middle of the afternoon.
ExxonMobil said operations at its 191,000-barrel-per-day refinery had returned to normal. Shell reported that its facilities were unaffected, while the Port of Rotterdam confirmed that its liquefied natural gas terminals continued operating.
No Fuel Supply Disruption Has Been Confirmed
Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port and one of the continent’s main hubs for importing, storing and processing crude oil, petroleum products and LNG. Incidents involving its energy infrastructure therefore receive close attention from commodity traders and logistics operators.
European gas transmission data showed a temporary decline followed by volatile sendout from the Gate LNG terminal. However, no connection between those movements and the Gunvor explosion has been established. The separate power failure may have contributed to the fluctuations.
At the time of publication, there were no reports of suspended tanker operations, closed oil berths or reduced fuel deliveries to customers. It is therefore too early to describe the accident as causing an energy shortage.
Energy Markets Are Highly Sensitive to Further Disruption
Concern surrounding the incident is heightened by instability affecting Middle Eastern energy routes and restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Europe’s increased reliance on seaborne LNG and internationally traded petroleum products has made the uninterrupted operation of ports such as Rotterdam more important.
Another risk factor is the level of Dutch gas inventories, which stood at around 40% according to Gas Infrastructure Europe. A prolonged shutdown of major terminals under these conditions could affect energy availability and prices across northwestern Europe.
For now, the explosion remains a localized industrial accident. Its wider market impact will depend on the extent of the damage at the Gunvor facility, the duration of repairs and the continued operation of Rotterdam’s other energy terminals.
