The administration has announced a new round of import duties covering over 80 countries worldwide. The affected nations include China, the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, India, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan. For most countries, the combined tariff rate will range from 10% to 12.5%, while higher tariffs will remain in place for certain nations.
The new measures replace the previous system of global tariffs, which expired after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the administration had unlawfully relied on emergency powers legislation to impose sweeping import duties. According to the White House, the new tariffs are intended to protect American industry, reduce the U.S. trade deficit, and strengthen domestic manufacturing.
Economists warn that the expanded tariffs could mark the beginning of a new phase of the global trade war. Retaliatory measures by major economies could drive up prices, disrupt international supply chains, and increase uncertainty across global markets. The new duties affect countries that account for nearly all U.S. imports, making this one of the most significant trade policy decisions in recent years.
