Construction Is Underway in Aksy District

Kyrgyzstan is building the Maamay international border checkpoint and the Kerben–Maamay road near its border with Uzbekistan. Bakyt Torobayev, Special Representative of the President of Kyrgyzstan for Special Assignments, inspected the two projects, according to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

“Construction of the Kerben–Maamay road and the Maamay checkpoint will take cross-border cooperation to a new level,” Bakyt Torobayev said

The projects are expected to strengthen connections between the border regions of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, facilitate bilateral trade and increase economic activity among local communities.

Checkpoint Will Include Veterinary Control

A veterinary control zone is planned at the new border facility. It will allow livestock farmers and businesses in Aksy District to conduct legal import and export operations involving animal products.

The crossing could shorten access to the border for nearby communities and simplify the movement of goods between neighbouring districts. However, the checkpoint’s planned processing capacity, detailed road specifications and construction completion dates have not yet been officially disclosed.

New Road Could Support Tourism

Once the Kerben–Maamay road opens, travellers from Uzbekistan should have easier access to tourist destinations in western Kyrgyzstan, including the Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve, Padysha-Ata and Kara-Kamysh.

The anticipated increase in visitor numbers could support hotels, restaurants, passenger transport, retail businesses and other service industries in Aksy District.

There are currently 15 operating checkpoints along the Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan border. Construction of the Maamay facility reflects the two countries’ efforts to expand border infrastructure as bilateral trade and regional travel increase.
