As the world’s largest technology companies continue integrating artificial intelligence into existing mobile platforms, Chinese startup StepFun, backed by Tencent Holdings, is proposing a fundamentally new approach to how smartphones operate.
At an event in Shanghai, the company unveiled StepX Neo, a device that its developers describe as the world’s first smartphone powered by autonomous AI. The handset runs on Step AOS, a proprietary operating system designed specifically for AI agents rather than traditional mobile applications.
The key difference is that users no longer need to switch manually between dozens of apps. Instead, they simply describe what they want in natural language, and the built-in AI determines the required workflow, coordinates multiple services, and completes the requested task with minimal user involvement.
According to the developers, the smartphone can independently interpret user requests, combine the capabilities of multiple digital services, and execute complex workflows ranging from information searches and service bookings to managing work-related tasks. This approach effectively transforms the smartphone from a platform for launching applications into a personal AI-powered digital assistant.
The unveiling of StepX Neo comes amid intensifying global competition in artificial intelligence. While Apple, Google, Samsung, and OpenAI are focusing on integrating AI features into their existing ecosystems, Chinese technology companies are increasingly developing devices designed from the ground up around the capabilities of large language models.
If the company’s claims are confirmed in real-world use, StepX Neo could become one of the first commercially available next-generation smartphones in which artificial intelligence is no longer just an additional feature, but the foundation of the entire user experience.
