China Calls on Japan to Abandon Remilitarization
Relations between China and Japan have once again come under the spotlight. On the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Beijing issued a strong statement urging Tokyo to abandon what it described as a course toward remilitarization, comply with its international nuclear non-proliferation commitments, and draw lessons from the history of World War II.
Beijing Reminds Japan of the Lessons of History
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki must never be repeated. At the same time, he stressed that the memory of the atomic bombings should not be viewed in isolation from the broader historical context of World War II. According to Lin, Japanese militarism and wartime expansion caused immense suffering and claimed the lives of millions across Asia, making historical reflection an essential element of today’s security policy.
Beijing also criticized what it described as attempts to reinterpret historical events by focusing solely on Japan’s status as a victim of the atomic bombings while overlooking its wartime actions.
China Voices Concern Over Japan’s Defense Policy
The statement was prompted by Japan’s recent efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities. Chinese officials pointed to plans to deploy anti-ship missile systems on Minamitorishima Island, as well as Tokyo’s continued expansion of security cooperation with the United States.
According to Lin Jian, these developments indicate an acceleration of Japan’s remilitarization and raise concerns about regional stability. Beijing argues that Japan should fully comply with its international obligations and refrain from actions that could increase tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
Asia-Pacific Security Remains in Focus
China also urged Japan to take into account the concerns of neighboring countries, refrain from what Beijing considers the spread of misleading narratives regarding regional security threats, and shape its policies in accordance with international law and the principles of peaceful development.
The statement comes amid continued geopolitical tensions in East Asia, where defense policy, military modernization, and historical memory remain central issues in diplomatic relations among the region’s major powers.
