Chinese President Xi Jinping used the opening ceremony of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai to present China’s vision for the future development and global governance of artificial intelligence. He stressed that AI technologies should advance through open collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, enabling their wider adoption across industries and accelerating economic development.
The second priority outlined by Xi was AI safety. He emphasized that humans must retain control over artificial intelligence while urging countries not to use national security concerns as a barrier to international technological cooperation.
Xi Jinping also highlighted the importance of preserving cultural diversity in the AI era and called for stronger global governance of artificial intelligence under the coordinating role of the United Nations. In addition, he emphasized the need to support Global South countries in narrowing the digital divide and ensuring more equitable access to AI technologies and their benefits.
