AliExpress, the global e-commerce platform owned by Alibaba, has been fined €550 million (approximately $629 million) by the European Commission for violating the requirements of the Digital Services Act. The regulator concluded that the company failed to take sufficient measures to combat the sale of illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products on its platform.
AliExpress said it disagrees with the European Commission’s decision, describing the fine as disproportionate. The company emphasized that it has significantly strengthened its compliance framework and content control systems in recent years and is currently reviewing all available legal options.
The penalty is the largest imposed since the Digital Services Act came fully into force. Previously, the European Commission fined social media platform X €120 million and Chinese e-commerce platform Temu €200 million under the same legislation.
Under the Commission’s decision, AliExpress must submit a corrective action plan by October 20. If the proposed measures are deemed insufficient, the company could face additional penalties.
