The new service aims to address one of the most persistent challenges in European logistics — the chronic shortage of truck parking facilities. Limited parking capacity frequently causes delivery delays, complicates compliance with drivers’ working and rest time regulations, and increases operational costs for transport companies.
How SID Works
The platform was developed by Toll Collect, the company responsible for Germany’s electronic truck toll collection system.
SID uses satellite-based monitoring data and information from onboard units installed in heavy goods vehicles to determine parking occupancy levels. The system analyzes the number of trucks currently parked at a specific location and compares this figure with the site’s available capacity. As a result, drivers can assess parking availability in advance and choose suitable rest areas before arriving.
This capability is particularly valuable given the strict European regulations governing drivers’ working hours and mandatory rest periods.
More Than 1,800 Parking Areas Covered
During the initial rollout phase, SID will monitor approximately 1,850 public truck parking areas located along Germany’s federal motorway network.
To provide a more accurate picture of occupancy levels, the system uses two capacity indicators. The first reflects the official number of parking spaces marked on-site. The second measures the actual usable capacity, taking into account areas where trucks frequently park due to space shortages, even if those locations are not officially designated for parking.
This approach offers a more realistic view of parking availability and better reflects conditions on heavily used freight corridors.
Why It Matters for Transport Operators
Germany remains Europe’s largest logistics hub, handling a significant share of international freight traffic every day. The country serves as a key transport gateway connecting Western, Central, and Eastern Europe.
The shortage of truck parking is particularly acute on major transit routes linking Germany with the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and France. In many cases, official parking areas reach full capacity by the evening, forcing drivers to search for alternative stopping locations.
By providing advance information on parking availability, SID can help drivers plan their stops more effectively, reduce time spent searching for parking, and lower the risk of violating driving and rest time regulations.
Free Access to Data
Once fully operational, SID data will be made available to third-party developers free of charge. This will allow parking availability information to be integrated into mobile applications and digital logistics platforms without additional costs.
Industry experts expect such integrations to help transport companies optimize route planning, minimize downtime, and improve overall fleet efficiency.
A New Stage in Logistics Digitalization
The launch of SID reflects the broader trend toward intelligent transport systems across Europe. Alongside electronic freight documents, digital tachographs, and advanced traffic management technologies, services like SID are becoming an increasingly important part of modern logistics operations.
