Competition within China’s domestic auto market is becoming more intense every year. In response, the country’s largest manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on international expansion. According to June sales data, exports have become the industry’s primary growth engine, enabling Chinese automakers to increase sales while strengthening their position in global markets.
Chery remained the leader in overseas deliveries, exporting more than 190,000 vehicles in June—an increase of nearly 80% compared with the same month last year. More than 75% of the company’s total sales came from international markets. BYD is rapidly closing the gap, almost doubling its exports to 175,000 vehicles during the month. Meanwhile, Geely recorded the strongest export growth among major Chinese automakers, with overseas shipments soaring by 157% year over year.
According to industry analysts, exports are no longer just an additional growth opportunity—they have become a strategic necessity for Chinese car manufacturers. Fierce domestic competition continues to put pressure on profitability, while international markets offer greater potential for sales growth and stronger margins.
Experts forecast that China’s vehicle exports will exceed 10 million units this year, around 3 million more than last year. At the same time, an increasing number of manufacturers view exports as only the first stage of their global strategy, which will be followed by localized production, joint ventures, and a broader presence in key international markets.
