Moldova and Ukraine Strengthen Transport Cooperation
Ukraine and Moldova have agreed to intensify cooperation on alternative routes for international freight transport. One of the main objectives is to establish backup logistics channels capable of supporting exports and imports when individual transport corridors face disruption.
The issue was discussed during a meeting between Ukraine’s Minister for Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport Mykola Kalashnyk and Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea.
According to Kalashnyk, the two sides discussed measures to reduce logistics costs for Ukrainian businesses, expand rail connections and increase capacity at the Ukrainian-Moldovan border.
New International Border Crossing Planned
Border infrastructure will become a separate area of cooperation. Ukraine and Moldova plan to develop a new international border crossing.
The project is intended to increase freight capacity, reduce border-crossing times and create an additional route for international transport.
The Ukrainian minister’s statement did not specify the planned location, design capacity or opening date of the new crossing.
Additional border capacity is particularly important for freight operators during periods when individual routes become congested or face security-related disruption.
Rail Freight Connections Will Be Expanded
Ukraine and Moldova also intend to develop rail connections. Rail transport is viewed as one of the main backup options for moving large cargo volumes when maritime logistics capacity becomes constrained.
Expanding rail routes could also shift part of the freight flow away from roads and reduce pressure on border checkpoints.
For Moldova, the projects could strengthen its role as a transit link between Ukraine, Romania and the wider European Union. Ukrainian cargo can move through Moldovan infrastructure toward Romania’s transport network, the ports of Galați and Constanța and other European destinations.
Palanca Transit Section Could Become Faster
The two countries also discussed transport connections in Ukraine’s Odesa region, including measures to simplify traffic along the 7.7-kilometer transit section near Palanca.
The route is important for connections between southern Odesa region and the rest of the region, as well as for traffic heading toward the Ukrainian-Moldovan border and the Danube area.
Changes to traffic procedures are expected to reduce journey times and improve the efficiency of both passenger and freight movements.
The two sides plan to hold an additional working meeting to discuss the practical implementation of measures affecting this section.
Alternative Corridors Are Becoming a Long-Term Network
Ukraine-Moldova transport cooperation is developing as part of broader work involving Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and the European Union to improve the resilience of regional logistics.
The objective is not to replace Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, which remain the main route for large-volume exports, but to create sufficient backup capacity during temporary disruptions.
Road border crossings, railways, the Danube, Giurgiulești, Galați and Romania’s wider transport infrastructure are increasingly being developed as interconnected alternative corridors.
For freight businesses, the effectiveness of this network will depend not only on new roads and border crossings but also on faster customs and border procedures, sufficient rail capacity and coordination of infrastructure projects between the two countries.
