Russia & Kazakhstan Launch First Driverless Truck Route

The global transportation sector has gained a new benchmark in autonomous logistics. Russia and Kazakhstan successfully completed the first international freight movement using highly automated trucks that traveled approximately 3,000 kilometers and crossed a national border while carrying commercial cargo.

The experimental operation became the first project of its kind in the history of international road freight transport. Two Russian-made autonomous trucks met at the Petukhovo border crossing after completing their respective routes from Moscow and Astana. During parts of the journey, the vehicles operated entirely in autonomous mode without driver intervention.

Until recently, most autonomous trucking projects were limited to testing within individual countries. The Russia–Kazakhstan route became the first known case in which autonomous freight vehicles were used to transport real commercial cargo across an international border.

The primary objective of the project was not only to demonstrate the capabilities of autonomous driving systems but also to evaluate their performance on a long-distance international route. During the journey, specialists assessed communication reliability, digital map accuracy, navigation performance, and vehicle behavior in areas with unstable network coverage.

According to the project participants, the autonomous driving system completed the entire route without any major operational issues.

How Many Autonomous Freight Trips Have Already Been Completed?

As of June 2026, tens of thousands of commercial autonomous freight trips have already been completed as part of Russia’s autonomous logistics development program.

Since the launch of the “Autonomous Logistics Corridors” project in June 2023, self-driving trucks have been operating on the M-11 Neva motorway, the Central Ring Road (CKAD), and the M-12 Vostok highway. During this period, autonomous vehicles have transported millions of tons of cargo and accumulated millions of kilometers under real traffic conditions.

The international route between Russia and Kazakhstan became the first cross-border phase of this program and effectively opened a new chapter in the development of autonomous freight transportation across Eurasia.

Unified Regulations for Autonomous Transport Are Becoming Essential

One of the key outcomes of the pilot project is the recognition that a common regulatory framework for autonomous freight transport is becoming increasingly necessary.

Industry experts emphasize that efficient deployment of autonomous vehicles is impossible without harmonized legislation, unified technical standards, and coordinated road safety requirements.

For this reason, Russia and Kazakhstan view the project as the first step toward creating common regulations for autonomous freight transport within the Eurasian Economic Union.

In the future, similar regulatory solutions could be extended to other international transport corridors throughout the region.

The autonomous trucks involved in the project are operated by NATCAR, a specialized transport company that already performs commercial freight operations along key logistics routes within Russia.

What Could the Market Look Like by 2035?

Approximately two million trucks cross the Russia–Kazakhstan border every year. Even a partial transition of this traffic to autonomous technologies could eventually result in hundreds of thousands of driverless international freight trips annually.

For international logistics, this would mean reduced dependence on the ongoing shortage of professional drivers, improved transport efficiency, more accurate route planning, and lower operating costs.

According to long-term forecasts included in Russia’s transport strategy, around 20% of the country’s freight vehicle fleet could be operating with autonomous technology by 2035.

If these plans are realized, the industry will move far beyond isolated pilot projects toward the large-scale deployment of self-driving trucks on both domestic and international routes.

The automation of freight transport has the potential to reshape logistics operations, reduce the impact of driver shortages, and improve the efficiency of transit routes connecting Europe, Central Asia, and China.

Against the backdrop of rapid digitalization across the global transport industry, the first international autonomous freight route between Russia and Kazakhstan represents not only a technological achievement but also a signal that autonomous logistics is gradually moving from the experimental stage into the practical reality of international trade.
