Search and rescue operations are continuing in Pereira, one of the cities hardest hit by the powerful earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10. Rescue teams are paying particular attention to signals coming from beneath the rubble. When signs of life are detected, rescuers stop heavy machinery, send response signals and begin carefully clearing debris by hand to avoid putting those who may still be trapped inside at further risk.
According to authorities, the earthquake has killed 265 people and injured 3,494, while another 496 remain missing. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said the disaster has affected more than 53,000 people.
Search operations remain the government’s top priority. Rescue teams are using specialized equipment and search dogs to inspect damaged buildings and locate possible survivors. Unstable structures and aftershocks are making the work more difficult, but every signal detected beneath the rubble offers hope that more people can be found alive.
