Military helicopters, thousands of firefighters, and millions of acres burned — the United States continues to battle one of its most severe wildfire seasons of the year. The Washington National Guard has now joined the effort to contain the rapidly spreading fires.
Washington National Guard aviation units have been deployed to assist in suppressing major wildfires in the eastern part of the state. Military helicopters are conducting water drops over the most critical fire zones, including the Modright and Brading Hill fires, providing vital aerial support to ground crews working to slow the spread of the flames.
Military Reinforces Wildfire Response
According to state authorities, cooler temperatures and weaker winds have enabled firefighters to make measurable progress near the Spokane area. Nevertheless, the situation remains highly challenging. Since the beginning of 2026, the United States has recorded more than 45,000 wildfires, which have burned nearly 5.5 million acres of land.
The deployment of military aviation has significantly enhanced firefighting operations by allowing water to be delivered quickly to remote and difficult-to-access areas while supporting crews on the ground. Authorities continue to closely monitor conditions, warning that if weather conditions deteriorate, the fires could spread rapidly once again.
