China’s water sector has received approval to use a generative AI model. Developed by the Ministry of Water Resources, the model is already being used to monitor reservoirs and manage water infrastructure.
According to China Daily, China has taken another step toward integrating AI into public infrastructure. A generative artificial intelligence model developed by the ministry’s Information Center has received official approval for use, marking the first such case in China’s water sector.
The model is already being used to monitor rivers, lakes and reservoirs, manage water infrastructure and support flood control efforts. The system combines large datasets, digital models and digital twin technologies, enabling more accurate monitoring of water systems and supporting decision-making.
The development is the result of several national research projects. Chinese experts have also built specialized datasets and a foundational model for the water sector, along with systems for evaluating the model’s capabilities and ensuring its security.
The official approval is expected to accelerate the adoption of generative AI in water resource management and further the development of digital twins. In essence, the move represents a shift from individual AI tools toward a broader digital system capable of working with entire water ecosystems.
